I enjoy telling people that this project began with a call from Karim Rashid’s studio. Primarily because Rashid’s studio is known throughout the world for their pioneering work, progressive design ethos, and the excellence they have achieved across multiple disciplines. I also enjoy telling people this because I am a weak and shallow man in constant need of approval from those that have attained a level of success and recognition which has eluded me throughout my career.
It’s also a true story.
A designer from the Rashid’s studio called the hotline one day looking for every metallic paint color in the Scuffmaster line. They loved the stuff and wanted easy access to the full chromatic range the product can produce. For all the different things I have made for Scuffmaster over the years, I’d never made this. I set to work right away and little later this guy popped out.
The box contains 284 two by four inch metallic paint samples (plus a cute little brochure) in a slimline box that has a nifty lid that also acts as a stand/display. I wanted there to be nothing between the designers and the colors they are searching for so I designed this so it sits open on the shelves of resource libraries at design firms.
